We have finished our Masterbath countertop. It's been a long time coming. In an attempt to fix a leaking faucet almost a year ago, I cracked the marble countertop. We have been washing our face, shaving and brushing our teeth with the kids in their bathroom. I decided to attempt to make my own Concrete countertop and it worked. New under mount sinks, faucets, knobs on the cabinets, lights, tile and next venetian plaster on the walls. Now we're back in business.

Lizzy is doing very well this year in soccer. She plays goalie most of the time and is getting good at it. She is trying her best not to let her club feet issues hold her back.

Eagle project

Scott is on his way to becoming an eagle scout. Today was his eagle project. As you can see we planted trees in the city of Monrovia. It was a good fun project. Scott would like to thank everyone involved. Scott is now one merit badge away from his goal.

For our 19 year anniversary, Bonnie and I have gone to the Marriott Shadow Ridge in Palm Desert. We had the kids for the first few day's over fathers day and then Bonnie drove them back to Monrovia where Nana was waiting for them. Thank you Nana for watching them. Scott and I played a round of golf on Saturday and then Bonnie and I played a round on our anniversary. We had a lot of fun but despite the 105 degrees weather. The pool was refreshing and the poolside virgin lava flows were Wonderful.

Yep. I burnt the cheese bread for our wonderful after church spaghetti dinner. I was a little upset but Lizzy wanted to comfort me. She said, "It's OK daddy, you always burn the bread, this is nothing new."

“To laugh or to Cry”
This morning Bonnie was getting ready for the day when she said out loud, “ I don’t want to go today”. Lizzy asked Bonnie, “ You don’t want to go where?” So Bonnie gently told Lizzy about going to the Dr. to get an annual Mammogram. Bonnie gently explained to her what a Mammogram was. With a funny look on her face, Liz said, “OK” and turned and walked away.
After school Liz came up to Bonnie and said, “Mommy, how was your Dr. boob thing today?” Bonnie trying to get Liz to use proper terminology said, “They are called breasts and it hurt when they squished them in the machine.” “Liz looked Bonnie over for a second or two and then said with a very straight and serious face, “they do look smaller from all the squishing.” Bonnie didn’t know whether to laugh or cry but in the end we all had a good laugh.

We were sitting at the dinner table enjoying a nice home cooked meal and Bonnie was reading a scripture to us. It started a discussion about angels which lead into Megan asking a question, "Why does the devil have so may names like, Satan, the devil and Christopher?" Bonnie and I looked at each other and started laughing. Then Megan said, “ and who would name their kid after the devil, I don’t get it.” After we stopped laughing we explained that its Lucifer and not Christopher.

HAPPY EASTER!

The Card Family wants to wish everyone a wonderful Easter. We dyed some eggs on Saturday and had a great Easter at church. We are hosting an Easter Dinner at our house and wish that everyone could come. After Church we went and visited Scott Alan Card's grave site as well as my great Grandma and Grandpa Smith. The kids left plastic Easter eggs on both sites.

Baseball is now off and running after this mornings opening ceremony. I had to cook pancakes and sausage and Scott was asked to carry the Flag. Baseball is all that I'm going to know for the next few months. We have 3 games per week plus practice when we can fit it in. We play teams from several other cities, Duarte, Rosemead, Covina, West Covina, Baldwin Park including the other Monrovia Pony team. I'm getting tired just thinking about it.

I wanted to go golfing today but its raining like crazy so I’m enjoying an old western, “Support your local Sheriff” with the family. Liz was kind enough to go and get my slippers for me. While I was watching an old Brady Bunch TV show with Liz on a lazy Saturday morning a commercial came on advertising the “Ped Egg”. I looked at Liz and said, “What in the world is this all about?” Liz said, “you know Dad, you use like a cheese grader on your feet taking off all the yucky stuff, you know like Nana has on her feet”
Sorry Nana, now everyone knows that you have “yucky stuff” on your feet that could use a cheese grader devise like the Ped Egg.

While we were at a wedding reception, Bonnie received a phone call on her cell from Liz. She left a message for Bonnie, "Mom, this is an emergency, I need you to go to Target on your way home from your wedding and buy me another ballet outfit. The one I'm wearing is giving me a major wedgie."
As Bonnie was listening to the message, once she heard, "This is an emergency" our hearts jumped and then both had a laugh as we found out that it was all over a "Major Wedgie".

Our family decided to go on a little hike in the Monrovia foothills to the waterfall. We all enjoyed the wonderful hike seeing different kinds of vegetation and animal life with the exception of a Crazy Killer Evil Squirrel. I took a picture of him just before he tried to attack. Megan said, "He's just protecting his NUTS"

Bonnie received a box of Sees candy from one of her ESL students. Liz said to Bonnie, "I love candy, I can't wait to have some" Bonnie, who loves Sees candy, giggled and said," Sorry Liz, this is for just Daddy and I". Megan who was sitting next to Liz looked over and said," It's OK Liz, We'll be the skinny one's in the family" I guess I'll be happy eating Sees Chocolate and NOT be skinny.

Grandpa Card broke his other hip after tripping over a box. At least that's the cover story. I heard that he was chasing grandma around the house trying to pinch her bottom. What ever the true story is, he is doing very well and should be out of the hospital by the beginning of next week. Now he has two new hip joints. He's almost bionic.

As a Family tradition, we always set up our "FAKE" Christmas Tree thanks to Grandma and Grandpa Allen and their "Real" Christmas Tree fire many years ago. The girls were acting up all day and we had finally had enough. We decided to punish them by sending them to their room to work out their problems. We also told them that they would not be able to participate in setting up the Christmas Tree. If they were good, we would allow them to put the lights and ornaments on the tree the next day. When we were finished setting up the tree, we walked up to the girls room to talk to them and we found this sign taped to their door. They always find ways to make us feel like bad parents.

Well, Megan is our first child to get railroad tracks across her face. Yep. Brace Face. She chose blue bases. What ever happened to just plain metal? I sure hope the blue color didn't cost me anything extra. Not that I don't want my little girl to look good because it's obvious that I do, otherwise I wouldn't put braces on her to straighten her teeth out. I just don't want to pay anything more then I have to. I had even thought about moving to England where Megan's jacked up teeth would be accepted or even celebrated. I soon discovered that that would have cost me more money to move the family then just putting her in braces. Sorry Megan. Daddy loves you.

Megan has become quite the photographer. She is improving with every pictures she takes. I just wanted to share a couple of pictures that she took over the summer. Megan entered a photo contest and won first place. Her winning picture was entitled "Just Straight Chillin" If I can ever find it again, I'll post it for everyone to see. I'm glad that she's artistic like her Nana.

The V.P. over my office had a retirement party and the St Frances Yacht club in San Francisco. Bonnie and I were invited to attend on Friday November 7th. We stayed at the Palace near the Union Square. We decided to make a get away out of it and to see the sights. We had a fun time going to Fisherman's Wharf, Ghirardelli square, Pier 39 and other parts of the city. We took a ride on the famous cable car and barely made it to Fisherman's Wharf after breaking down (loosing the cable) twice. We had to be pushed by a truck one time and then pushed up hill with a semi truck. The cable car was packed and very uncomfortable. People just jump on the sides and hang on for dear life as the trolley moves from block to block. Bonnie and I were sitting in outside seats when this man and his wife jumped on the sides right in front of us. Needless to say, the woman's purse kept swinging as the cable car was moving hitting me in my "Sensitive Area". I sure was glad when she got off cable car before I had permanent damage.

The kids loved the little train ride.

There is a little school house in the town. The kids got a chance to see what it would be like to go to a school back in the 1800's. Meg got in trouble and got the paddle. Liz was acting up and got the wrong answer so she had to sit on a stool and wear a Dunce Cap. Andrew got in trouble and had to stand against the wall with his hands behind his back. Those "Card Kids" would have been in trouble all the time if they had to go to school back then.

They have lots of cabins, stores and shops with demonstrations on how the pioneers lived. They do a really good job showing the kids how to wash cloths, make soap, shoes and other leather goods, woodworking and lots of other things. It was a good experience for them.

In July while visting Nana and Papa's house we all went to Heritage park "This is the Place Monument". Nana, Jeff & Jen's family, Shari and kids all went and had a really fun time.

No this isn't a Halloween Picture. The girls just decided to give Mom and Dad a show. A football player and a cheer leader. I don't know what got into them but they both have that showman bug in them. They had a little skit that they wrote, practiced and then performed for us. Mom and Dad enjoyed it but Scott thinks his sisters are a little on the goofy side.

Liz just loves sitting in holes and waiting for a big wave to come and wipe her out. You should have heard the screaming.

Grammy came down to the beach and enjoyed an afternoon with us.

Scott has become a pro at catching waves. He just loves trying to run over his little sisters as they play in the water.

We had a fun time this summer in Laguna Beach. We went to the Beach every day (except Sunday of course). We caught and rode waves, built sand castles, stepped on bees (twice for Dad) and walked on the rocks.

Diane Keaton (the actress) sat next to us one morning down on the beach. She had some kids with her. One of the boys that was with her came out of the water and spit in the sand in an attempt to get the salt water out of his mouth. Ms Keaton turn to him and said, "We don't spit, thats Low Rent, we are high class people". We all got a chuckle out of that and for the rest of the trip we used the line, "Thats just LOW RENT, We ARE HIGH CLASS PEOPLE" of course we looked like Low class people in Laguna Beach trying to act like High Class people.

Liz is playing Soccer again this year. She is on the Tiger Sharks. She loves getting out there and running around. She still gets tired rather quickly but its good for her. She loves playing Goalie. I'm not sure if its because she really likes the position or if she likes it because she doesn't have to run around as much. She improves each game.
We will have to see about playing next year because U10 division starts getting more competitive and about 1/4- 1/2 the games are on Sunday.

Over the 4th of July we took the family to visit Nana and Papa in Utah. We visited the Gardens and the Dinosaur museum at Thanksgiving point. The gardens were a hit with the family. We rented a golf cart and enjoyed the garden tour in style.

Scott played baseball again this year. He played for the Monrovia Black Pony team. We traveled to several different cities to play against different leagues. I was an assistant coach this year and enjoyed it much better then being the team manager. The team did well overall.

The Hole (Cave) is the beginning of the climb down Mooney Falls. Yes it looks dark. On the climb out I hit my head and just about knocked myself out. That would have been a fun 200'fall.

We've had a busy year in 2008. Scott and I went on a backpacking trip to Havasu Falls AZ. It was a wonderful trip. We hiked in 10 miles and then took a helicopter out of the canyon. The falls are absolutely beautiful.
Moony falls gave me a little scare. To hike down to the falls you have to go into a dark and scary cave and then scale down the side of the cliff. A chain is secured into the side of the rock to give you a place to grip so you don't fall. I have a phobia of heights so with my hands sweating like crazy the chain became slippery. I had a little anxiety attack just looking at the climb down but I had to "MAN UP" once I got passed by a group of 60+ year old women and of course not forgetting that My son left me to die on the mountain alone. He had already climbed down "Raced Down" to the bottom. Little Punk. He told me that he just wanted to get to the bottom so he could catch me when I fall. Thanks Son.

P.S. This summer I was called to be the new Scout Master. I wouldn't have been called to be Scout Master if the Bishop had been there on the trip and had seen me clinging to the side of the mountain in fear.

Aloha. For Christmas this year Pat and Bonnie’s Mom wanted everyone to spend the special event in Hawaii. We all had lots of fun doing various activities such as reading a book (Bonnie),whale watching (throwing up for Scott), Snorkeling, reading a book on the beach (Bonnie), shopping, eating, Reading 3 books (Bonnie), walking on the beach, along with many other things. It was a vacation that we will all remember for the rest of our lives. We have Pat and Grammy to thank for this memorable trip. More pictures to come.

Well it’s another year of Soccer for Liz. She is on the Tigers with daddy as an assistant coach. Here are some of the pictures after her first game. She was a defender in the first half of the game and she was put in as goalie in the second half and made several saves. If they were to keep score at this age group the Tigers would have won 1-0.

On Aug. 17- 26th We went on our annual Family Laguna Beach trip this year. It was 10 days of swimming in the ocean, boogie boarding, walking on the beach, climbing on the rocks, snorkeling and all the other beach things you do. We saw dolphins, seals, crabs and lots of fish. The water was clear and it was a weird feeling seeing fish swim between you legs as you wade in the ocean.

We always build a sand castle together as a family each morning at the beach. It also keeps people from parking themselves infront of our ocean front spot.

I enjoy swimming in the ocean. It can be a little scary if you go too far out. I try to stay within 100 yards from shore. I don't want the fishies to get me.

I ask them to smile and this is what I get.

I had an Ice Hockey game while we were on vacation. It's a quicker drive from Laguna Beach, 20 min. vs 45-50 min. from Monrovia. We Won

Bonnie and I had the opportunity to get tickets, thanks to Bonnie’s Moms connections, to the Pageant of the Masters this year. Live (as opposed to dead) people are painted and dressed up to look like well known paintings. This years theme was, "Young at Heart". It was a fun experience. Thank you again to Barbara for watching the kids while we enjoyed a night out on the town.

Well it’s been a good summer. I’m way behind on our Family Blog so I’ll try to catch up. In July I went with some of the young men and Rick on a wake-boarding trip to St George UT. We all had a lot of fun.

Bonnie and I just came back from our 17-year anniversary trip up the California cost. We stayed at the Kon Tiki Inn in Pismo Beach for two nights and then up to the Monterey Beach Resort in Monterey for 3 nights. We had a wonderful time without the kids.

We decided to visit the wonderful Monterey Bay Aquarium on Tuesday morning. It’s always neat to see all the fish.

We were able on Tuesday night to drive up to Santa Cruz Boardwalk and meet Linda and George along with Steven, Catharine and two of their friends. The boardwalk was celebrating its 100-year-old birthday and all rides were .75 cents. The hot dogs were .75 cents along with the soda. "What a deal" Of course I pigged out and ate 3 dogs and two sodas. Oink.

The weather was quite a bit cooler once we got up the coast. We went from our Monrovia 90+ degree weather to 60-63 degree weather. It was a bit cold for us Southern California warm-blooded types.

My mom flew down from Utah to watch the kids. We are both thankful for all that she’s done for us. Thank you, Mom. The kids just love their Nana.

Bonnie and I found a wonderful road-side stand on the way to Avala Beach. They sell all kinds of fresh fruit and vegetables as well as preserves. The homemade ice cream topped with fresh picked raspberries made it all worthwhile.

The BBQ is under construction and should be done in a few weeks. I can’t wait for it to be finished. It hasn’t stopped us from using it. We had our MYBL Baseball Tigers Team Party. Everyone had fun.

Yes. The pool is finally finished. I can’t believe that it took 6 months to get it finished. You can see from the pictures the different stages. We are all enjoying swimming. The BBQ is in the middle of being worked on so we can Swim and EAT. Life is Good.

The pool has now been Dug and Steeled. It has taken several months now for us to get stared on the project but we are finally underway. At this rate we should be swimming by summer. Maybe.

Well, finally the long awaited pool project has begun. The demolition has stop and the building has begun. Today the excavation crew from Long Excavations showed up and lad out he dimensions of the pool. They started digging right away.

Liz had fun at soccer. She was kicking everyone's shins. The teams aren’t supposed to keep score of the games but if they did, Liz’s team would have won the game 8-1. Liz played a defender and kicked the ball away a few times and took a few girls out. Hey, she’s a Card, what can I say.
